Beware of "IRS Investigative Bureau" Phone Call Scam from (415),(347) ,(716) , (206), (425) and other area codes!

Several clients and numerous other people around the country have been getting calls from people claiming to be the the IRS "Investigative Bureau" from 415-484-2132 and 415-484-8341 in San Francisco and Chicago 347-559-7963 and many other phone numbers and area codes - see the comments section's below for many other phone #'s. Almost universally, these phone calls come from people with strong accents  (Middle Eastern sounding) with very Americanized names like "Daniel Robinson" for example. They threaten the callers to "pay" or "face imprisonment" and many other tales which you can also see below in the Comment's section.

These telemarketers are so misinformed they have been calling during the government shutdown (in which the IRS is closed). You gotta wonder who these people are:  Al Qaeda? Our understanding is that the IRS on to these people and slowly but surely they'll be stopped. But for now :  they are truly scaring people. In many instances, they are asking people to send them them money/the taxes due OR ELSE!

A client today told me her experience today:

"A Middle Eastern man claiming to be Daniel Robinson called me from 415-484-2132 and they told her they were the "IRS Investigative Bureau" -- they told her to call them back immediately at 415-484-2132 and ask for Kenneth Webster -- you must know that you are in serious delinquency and we will expect to have your case before the magistrate by Monday."

GOOD NEWS - 10/29/13 -- our understanding is that the IRS is investigating this SCAM. So we're hopeful it will be shutdown soon! - IRS update  is HERE

You can see more on this scam reporting thread : HERE
(I think this scam has already shut down the 8341 line - above.)

If your case is currently not collectible with the IRS or you have handled your tax situation - no worries - you can ignore these scammers. If you do have a tax problem that you need analyzed by a tax professional, call us at WATAX.COM at 1-888-282-4697.

Received two calls from the same number 415-662-8387 in the last two days..same message IRS. Didn't answer they left message for immediate return call, which I didn't since the idiot was calling for someone who had the phone number before me. Blocked the call. Also filed complaint with IRS and Do Not Call Registry. Punks ought to be water-boarded.

Just received a call from 415-662-8387. San Franciso area. The heavy accent was an immediate red flag. His name was Ricky Johnson. Yeah right... Said he was from the tax litigation department and I was in deficiency. HA HA good one. When I asked for his Employee ID # he said he didn"t have one...HA HA ! all fed employees have an ID #. Further, they very rarely call on the phone, but if they do it'a always preceded by way too many threatening letters. I mentioned the word "fraud" and he hung up. This is a very un-imaginative scam. Just tell em to jump off the Golden Gate bridge..

I called back and when I told them I was an attorney they got my first name (didn't appear to care about my last name)took my number and said the IRS would contact me directly. Scam.

Hope they get caught real soon!!

I came home from the Thanksgiving holiday to find a message left from the tax litigation division of the IRS. The agent Alex Cook suggested it would be unwise to disregard the message, and my attorney or I should call back as soon as possible. No prior communication by mail... a call the day after Thanksgiving... Hummm. I called (415) 662-8387 this morning (Monday) and asked what middle initial they had for me. They couldn't answer the question, and said I would be receiving something in the mail very soon that would explain everything. Click.

Received a scam call from 347 area code this morning. Person posing as federal criminal investigation said that there was a warrant for our arrest for non payment of taxes and if we don't pay right now, there will be a police car at our door within 30 mins with an arrest warrant. Of course I knew this was a scam and asked this man to send the info by postal mail, hung up and called our police dept. The accent was pure American and I could hear many more people in the background making similar calls.

Received two calls from the same number 415-662-8387. He had a very heavy Mid-Eastern accent.
I hung up on him as he asked me for my attorneys phone number. He called back, insisting on this info and after I asked him who he represented, I told him he was full of SH__! and hung up.
He then called up and left a message that I'm going to jail.

This is the second call I got from 415-662-8387. The first call was left as a voicemail. I could barely understand the message and accidentally deleted the message. I thought this very odd coming from the UNITED STATES IRS. I just got another call asking me to call back the same number he called from. I asked if there was an 800 number. He said have a good day. I'm glad I google searched the number. Several indication made me believe this is a scam.

Just received a call from heavy accented fellow, #415-223-1186, informing me that a warrant was out for my arrest unless I rectified my tax issue of nearly $7,000.

I start probing him, asking him specifics. He then starts talking ish to me about my bank accounts being frozen and going to jail for mandatory sentence of 6 months. He was so aggressive, I was sure this was a scam.

After I hung up on him mid threat, I searched "IRS Scam area code 415" and the page lit up with results.

I may have been born yesterday, but I wasn't born last night.

Just received a call yesterday (1/7/2014) from 415-230-2722 from a heavily accented voice saying she was calling from IRS. I was almost going to call them back but thought I'd first Google this number and then came across your Web site and info about this scam. When I listened to their voicemail again, certain words seemed a bit too casual to be from the IRS and also the accent was so heavy I couldn't make out some words she said, including her name. She did say "don't try to disregard this call" and threatened "legal" something. Glad I checked this phone number out first. Jay - Thanks for posting this info! I'm sure this is helping a lot of folks across the country.

I got a call from 206-436-4231 today from a man with heavy accent that I couldn't get the name, it sounded something like a Butler. I called back and his voicemail say Mark Watson and his mailbox is full!

Another name and number here. Mark Watson. 206-436-4231. Same story about the IRS, warrant, impending arrest etc.

The perp had a thick accent (Indian/Middle Eastern?). His bluff was quite convincing. Had me going for a few mins. He had my full name and correct address. Gave me a badge number and a case number too.

Finally I told him I have his voice recorded and submitting to FBI for a pattern match.

Good luck and watch out for these scum bags!

Just received a call from 425-209-1033 that there is a deficiency and a miscalculation on my last year W2 that I filed.
That thick middleeastern type of an accent mentioned that I should call 425-209-1033 (it was the same number that had called me) and talk to Mr. Cann Peterson. When I asked on the first same guy as to what exactly is the issue, he told me that he was allowed only to inform of the issues and I should talk to Peterson to get more details. He said if Peterson is busy, call him again later and talk to him.
I know, IRS does not give such instructions to talk to individuals and they send mails.
This is just a scam. You may please add this number 425-209-1099 to this list of scammers.

Add another number to the list 415-323-1082.

The call connection was very bad with echos and it seems the female voice had some accent. She asked me to call back 415-323-1082 and ask for Michael carter. When I called that number I got a voice mail with a different extension.

NY Area: 607-323-3064.

Just received a call from Jerry Brown who couldn't tell me which IRS branch office he was calling from. I then spoke with Stephen Martin who also would not give me their office location so I could look it up on the IRS website and call back.

After a few minutes of polite insistence from my end "Stephen" became really frustrated and said "we are not here to answer your questions!" and hung up. Both Jerry Brown and Stephen Martin had strong Indian accents. I have submitted a complaint to the FTC.

NOTE: When I asked for a supervisor's name I was given Damon Martin. A quick lookup shows this is the name of a real IRS employee.

A couple of days ago, I got a phone message from an "Officer" Adam Scott asking me to immediately call 716-259-2908. He said he was from "the IRS.... the Internal Revenue Service". He wanted me or my attorney to contact him and not ignore him, or we would suffer the consequences. I do not know what type of accent he had. It was definitely not Middle Eastern, as someone suggested earlier. I immediately smelled a rat, and I am disappointed that I cannot find any place on the official IRS pages to report phone abuse.

I had 6 messages, all left on 2/7/14, from 9:35 am t0 5:22 pm, that fit the description on this post. I saved all messages on my machine and hope to share it with authorities. The first number used was 530-208-9859. According to reverse phone lookup, it came from South Lake Tahoe, CA. The others referred me to 866-307-7745. I couldn't understand the name on the first message, but it sounded something like Derek Miller. The remaining 5 messages used the name David Jones. Interestingly enough, the accent became less difficult to understand with each phone call, so the caller was improving his English speaking skills over time.

I too received a call from a "Chris Harris" informing me that I'm in serious violation of the IRS laws and I could be arrested and taken to prison "as early as tomorrow"! I said, "wow, I can't wait!" and I think that gave them away and he said "have a nice day, sir" and hung up immediately! :)

I got a call this morning from 201-436-4144
Saying it was the IRS and wanted to talk to my formar husband.
When I told him how should I trust he was from the IRS working on SATURDAY before 8:00 AM he gave an ID number and his phone number.
I explain that the person didn't live there any longer and he continued insisting I so he is not there at the moment right? It sounded so fishy that I asked him to reapt what I said to him and he was just saying YES, Yes, Yes several times like a dumb machine. I hang up on him!

These people are not even in the US, they use a magic jack to fake a call like it's made from 415 area code , very heavy accent and the IRS most of the time will send a mail to make sure you are getting the message , these idiots don't even know where the IRS building is located in San Fran or anywhere else in the US for that matter , I bet a million dollar that they don't even know what IRS stands for .

I received two calls from area code 347 in the last few days, saying it was the IRS calling, and that there would be a lawsuit against me, and they were giving me a last chance to have my attorney call them. A few weeks earlier I had received 3 calls from area code 855. The 347 caller had an accent, but I couldn't identify it. He said his name was Michael (I didn't catch the last name). He sounded very serious and very scary. It is very upsetting even though I pay my taxes regularly. I think last month I got two similar calls from area code 201. May be I should change my phone number? These people are leaving me voice mails and addressing me by my name. It is scary.

The phone number that called me today was 347-501-5184. On another website the posters wrote that it's a fraud and should be reported to the police and the FBI. Should I call the IRS instead?

Got a call on my office landline from an "IRS" agent on Friday May 9th (almost end of business time, clearly designed so that it's too late to call the actual IRS office or attorney to get advice), saying on May 2nd a letter was sent to me asking for back taxes, and since I have not responded the case has become very sensitive and the police are on their way to arrest me !!! Tells me to call the "IRS Investigation Bureau" and talk to John Davis(415-251-1037). I do that - and he tells me that if I pay $ 3,988.21 in the next 30-40 minutes all will be well, and I will save my house, car, passport, driving license from being seized and being thrown into jail for 2 years. I was instructed to call the "Restitution Officer" Kenneth Webster (415-251-9049)- and pay the money. When I called this last link and asked him to give me the details of the years for which these back taxes are due - he hung up.
Just for fun - I kept calling both the numbers and taunting them - and they stammered and hung up every time.
These people need to be traced and arrested, because some people will get scared and end up paying.

Just received a call from a someone with a very heavy Indian/Pakistani accent claiming to be from IRS Bureau of Investigation. He asked me to call his supervisor "Edward Maxwell" at 415-251-9150 (Same number that appeared on my caller ID) to inquire about the judgement for deficient back taxes for the amount of $3,988.46. He said the court already ruled against me & I have to pay this amount. They wanted my lawyer information because they don't have it on record. I asked him for which years & he said 2008 & 2009. I said, "Since when does the IRS do audits further back than 3 years?" He said, "The courts issued a judgement against you & I have an affidavit I'm reading from & the police is on their way to arrest you within two hours." He had my home address. He said that they sent me a notification on April 15th. I told him that when the IRS sends a notification, they usually give 30 to receive a response. He said, "It's been more than 30 days." I told him, "And you want me to believe that they went to court & got a judgement against me without any proof that I received their notification, in a little over a month?" He said, "If you don't believe me, just wait for a couple of hours and the police will come & arrest you." Then he hung up.

I got a call from (415)251-4089, named Kenneth Webster, last Saturday, May 31, 2014. I was told to call him back. When I told him that I should have a tax refund of $107K instead of tax due, he got mad and tried to yell on me. He tried to scare me by saying that I will be in jail if I don't pay the tax. When I asked him about my tax refund again, he hung up. I kept calling him again many times, he kept hanging up the phone. It sounds to me that he had a heavy accent similar to those people from India. Particularly, he talked in the way like tech support agents from the big IT companies who out-sourced their services to India.

This Kenneth guy told me that my case hasn't been registered yet, so I have a chance to settle what I "owed" the IRS... He told me I had 30 minutes to settle the payment with a Bill Voucher. Guess where he told me to go and get the Bill Voucher? HOME DEPOT! LOL... Said I needed to pay in cash. What did I do? I played along. My two girls were napping and I had some free time on my hands! So I told Kenneth (in a panic voice), I am getting into my car right now to go to the bank and withdraw the money and then I'll head to HOME DEPOT. He told me to call him when I arrive at HOME DEPOT. I told absolutely. Never called back of course. This douche bag had the audacity to call me back but I ignored the call. My girls are up now and I have things to do!

Same story. The names I got were Officer Heather Grey, Michelle Brown, Mike Larry, Kenneth Webster. The numbers they quoted were (415) 251 9049, (415) 251 1037.
The scary thing was that they managed to disable by internet access on my cell phone during the call.
They asked me for my attorney name and number and I said I didn't have one. They said an arrest warrant would be issued within the hour unless I took care of this, and bank accounts, drivers license, passport would be suspended, and I'd be in prison for a year.
I believed that they were for real . I went to the bank, got cash. I got as far as Safeway where they instructed me to buy a 'reloadit' card with cash. When, I asked how I could tell they were for real, he said I could get my attorney to call him.
I eventually figured out that the IRS would not do business via an untraceable cash purchased payment card ... and got the guts to hang up.

Kelly Peterson 571 286 3107 left a voice message instructing to call back immediately as I was a primary suspect in fraud against the IRS. Whoever left the message actually concealed his accent pretty well until he got to the pronunciation of certain words. I was actually told to have my lawyer call them. I was almost convinced until this guy answered with his thick middle eastern accent
I called back to see what the hell they were talking about as I've been unemployed for years. They said I've been holding side jobs and never reported income to the IRS so I will be arrested in the next 60 minutes. Demanding they explain their case, they transferred me to another heavy accented middle eastern/ Indian man. All bullshit. This new loser asked me to give them my location so they could come arrest me and put me in bars. Deciding to test them I told them they'd have to prove their case and they can't just put a new mother away. They had the nerve to say they would take away my baby and I would be behind bars if I don't pay. Wow, these people are fcking animals. They need to be stopped immediately and be the ones behind bars scaring, extorting and bothering good and decent people. The IRS always send
Letters and if they really wanted to arrest you they wouldn't be sending some officer.with a generic name to call you first. These people make me sick and should be behind bars for the rest of their lives.

I had him repeat it several times but still didn't catch what he called it. He left a message for my husband to call him back (which obviously we won't) and that it was confidential and urgent. Apparently not urgent enough to tell the co-filer though! Definitely scam. I'm just going to tell them if they call back that they have to communicate in writing.

Received a robocall on July 2. Caller ID said Jagruti Gandhi. Phone # was 415-251-1037 (San Fran) Message left was same IRS Investigative Bureau. Name to call back was Officer Heather Gray. I'm so grateful that I could Google that number and find this blog!

Received a voice message today from 415-251-1037. Computer generated message stating this is the IRS with an urgent matter and to call back before legal action is taken. Sounded fishy so I googled the number. I'm glad I did.

Robo call from 415-251-1037 claims they are an IRS Officer named Heather Gray. Heavily accented female voice. Really when you cross over or claim to be in USA we do not require you to Americanize your name. Keep the name your mother and father gave you. Americans are not so stupid to know your name is Heather, Scott, Ronald or John when your accent clearly states otherwise.

Just adding Mark Watson to the list @ 206 687 9319.

Just got a call from 915-317-4924. The guy could barely speak English. He told me his name was Patrick Simon and was from the Department of Treasury. He told me I would be arrested if I hung up. I was transferred to another guy that could barely speak English. His name was Robert Mathew. I told him not to bother me with his scams, he called me an F'ing b!tch and told me the police would be coming for me. Don't waste your time with their threats!! Just hang up!!

I received an email threatening me. I blocked all their numbers, so now they email me. I am going to file a complaint with the DA to see what they can do. Jerks I hope they can find them and prosecute.

I have reviewed the Google Analytics of this very popular scam post and interestingly enough the country after the U.S.A. with the most visitors to this post (12,000 visitors by the way this year) is INDIA. So...I think the scammers are headquartered in INDIA. I think. There is also some smaller traffic from Canada and Jamaica. But from the sounds of the fake agents -- India seems to be a fit.

We received several calls on our landline over the weekend and again on Monday from a man with an almost impenetrable Indian accent who claimed to be from the IRS. He said I needed to call Kevin (or Karen) Brown right away at 202-506-9723 about serious issues with my taxes.

Got a call from "Michael Brown" from the same irs investigative bureau, claimed I was being threatened with "criminal charges", but the voice quality was so low due to his lousy indian voip solution most of the message was mangled.

Fraud call from 202-239-7034 from an Indian sounding guy claiming to be Chief Investigation Officer of the IRS. He asked me "Are you aware that the IRS has found miscalculations....blah blah". I said "I am aware that you are a fraud!" He shouted "Thank you" and put the phone down before I could say anything more. Why hasn't the real IRS tracked these folks? They have called 10 other people I know, so this phenomena is quite widespread.

Scam 206-687-9319 with the same IRS Warrant Scam and wants a call back.

Returned call to (202)506-9962 and asked the "IRS officer" that answered what office are you with? He replied: "the IRS Investigation Bureau." He hung up when I said there is no IRS Investigation Bureau.

IRS Investigative Bureau said owed back taxes. Referred me to this # when I questioned and asked for associated SS3. When I questioned them they said I would soon find out that a warrant was issued for my arrest. Then hung up. Both had heavy Indian accents which seemed strange to me to start, sounded like a call center. They should be easy to find and shut down with the numbers provided.

Received call from Officer Sandy Miller with a very heavy Punjab accent, almost unintelligible, with the tax crime investigation unit of the IRS. I, or my attorney, am to call her back "the instant I get this message" at their hotline #917-300-3617. She said if I didn't return call, all she could do is wish me luck with my tax refund? I called the number and got a recording from officer Donald Miller, also Punjab accent, saying leave a message. Do they really believe we are this stupid???

I've gotten 4 of these calls in Southeastern PA. Two were from some woman purportedly named Heda, and two from a man. Neither had any discernable accents. The last one used an 888 number. When I called back, nothing, no ring tone even. All have threats telling you to contact your lawyer and you will be taken to court. It's just some sickos' idea of a joke, none of the return phone numbers ever work.

Got 2 calls today from 415-251-6983 claiming to be an IRS agent. The call didn't make much sense. The person did ask me to call this same number they were calling me from. Never called back. Figured it's gotta be a scam.
